Will it be ok in the end?

In the book of life, there is often a strong temptation to skip to the end, to find comfort in knowing that everything turns out ok. Are the children going to be alright? Will Johnny ever understand Maths? If he doesn’t, will he still be a good dad and a provider for his family? It’s as if we believe that seeing the future will provide comfort amid the uncertainties of the present. However, unlike books, life doesn’t allow us such luxury. But I wish we could have the foresight. It would make the anxiety so much less!

Pretending for a moment that time travel is possible, what would ‘a good ending’ look like? When all is said and done, I suppose we do know what the ending looks like. It includes happiness, health, wealth, and a life that has not been wasted—a life worthy of the ultimate commendation: ‘Well done, good and faithful...’ So, in many ways, the good ending looks exactly as we choose for it to look like.

But what if we make the wrong choices along the way? Ahhh…now that’s a different matter. Remember, left and right turns along the way do not necessarily change the destination. They could alter the path, but ultimately, the end goal remains a choice within our control.

This is a good reminder for me today. We are just into our new UK school year. Folks in South Africa are wrapping up their year soon. But already I have started worrying that we will not be learning enough, doing enough or progressing enough. Let it go Mama!… the year (academic and otherwise) will almost certainly not look as planned. But that doesn’t have to change the destination.

We will learn, adapt, reskill, and recalibrate. The wrong turn just means a detour and offers some additional learning along the way.

We will embrace the opportunities.

We will find joy in the simple things.

We will see it as an adventure.

Got it.

But can anyone please confirm that Johnny will really be ok if he never learns calculus??
